On Jan. 22, 1973, the U.S. Supreme Court issued the landmark legal decision Roe v. Wade. The court effectively legalized abortion across the country by striking down a Texas statute banning the procedure.
Prior to Roe v. Wade, a Chicago-based women’s health group performed nearly 12,000 safe illegal abortions between 1969 and 1973 with no formal medical training
